Where are your cards going? #Heart2Heart

Huge lessons learned!

This past week we released EPISODE #16 and it covered a couple of weighty topics. The collector in San Diego had just beaten a bout with lung cancer and it hit home with Marcel, because both of his parents died of LC years ago. This was an emotional conversation.... but the piece that has really struck a chord with viewers was the discussion around PREPARING your COLLECTION for when you are gone.

This is something very few collectors seem to take seriously... young or old. We've seen this evidenced across many collections the past year (think of EP 9 & 10). But it's something that can be almost solved in a few hours. Have you taken a minute to think about how your spouse, kids, grandkids, parents, etc... would handle your collection?

This is something I've thought about recently. In fact, the past few months I've taken the time to write out a few key pieces of information for my wife/oldest kids to know. Here are the questions that I answered for them.

  • Where are the most valuable cards? (I even color coded them on sleeves)

  • Which ones need to remain with the kids...and which one are free to sell.

  • What options she has with the high-end?

    • What 2 or 3 folks to call first to ask for help.

    • What approximate value should she expect?

    • Who she CAN'T work with in the industry. (This is important to me)

  • The REST of the collection....

    • Which 2 or 3 folks/orgs she can trust to liquidate our collection?

    • What approximate value she should expect? (Be realistic here)

  • Point her to the spreadsheet with information on certain cards (purchases/sells).

  • Remind her, these are just cards. Don't ever let these become a burden on the family.

Even if it's something this simple... it'll be hugely helpful. It'll help make that inevitable moment more reflective/appreciative versus stressful. Trust me, that's big.

STOP.... and THINK

CARD MARKET HEALTH

We keep trending upward! This week we saw nearly every metric tick upward. All sales #'s and volume #'s beat week over week data. In fact, volume as a whole was up over 3% this past week. Very impressive. It wouldn't be surprising to see this trend continue the next few weeks...potentially into Spring Training.

But! And yes...this is a big "but"... this time of year we should expect week over week growth. This is a very cyclical tick upward. The big concern is that compared to this SAME week in 2022... we are down 34% in combined SALES REVENUE and almost 8% in VOLUME. Yes, the 3rd week of Jan in 2022...we saw almost $44million in SALES across these categories. Down almost $15million the same week THIS year!

Where do you think that money went? Did it just fall into the cracks of "life"... how do we get that $15million back each week? Will we ever get that back again?

If we get that money trickling back into the hobby, and it will have to be a trickle, where does it go? Raw/Graded/Wax?
